![]() | The Premier Saxophone Quartet was formed in 2005 by four Bay Area masters of the instrument. Soprano saxophonist Dale Wolford is professor of saxophone at San Jose State University and California State University, Stanislaus; the San Francisco Chronicle calls his playing "fresh and expressive, with genuine impulses of feeling." On alto saxophone, Kevin Stewart has performed with leading chamber groups and symphony orchestras, appearing recently in Carnegie Hall with the San Francisco Symphony. David Henderson, playing tenor saxophone, has degrees from the University of Michigan and the Juilliard School, and he received a first prize in saxophone from the Conservatoire de Bordeaux. Aaron Lington, on the baritone saxophone, is director of jazz studies at San Jose State University; he performs with both jazz artists and classical orchestras. As a quartet they perform a diverse repertoire of classical and jazz works. |

FRIDAY May 9, 2008: Cell Block Seven | |
| A traditional jazz band, Cell Block Seven also includes in its offerings a sprinkling of blues and miscellaneous other melodies. Add such touches as a venerable Stradivarius E-flat washboard, a trio of double bell euphoniums (played by three men), banjo, guitar, mandolin, and more. The eight band members (one was added after the group got its name) are not, for the most part, professional musicians, but their public's enthusiatic response to their performances bears witness to their excellence. | ![]() |
