2008-2009 Season Concerts

Sat. October 4, 2008, 8:00 PM – Percussion Group Cincinnati

PERCUSSION GROUP CINCINNATI was founded in 1979 and consists of members Allen Otte, James Culley, and Russell Burge, all of whom are faculty members and ensemble-in-residence at the College-Conservatory of Music of the University of Cincinnati. Percussion Group Cincinnati is particularly respected for its knowledge of and experience with the entire range of the music of John Cage. More recently, the Group has developed similar special relationships with John Luther Adams, Qu Xiao-Song, Russell Peck, and with Larry Austin on the Charles Ives Universe Symphony project. Recent performances include the Shanghai International Spring Music Festival, a tour of Japan, and the premiere of a new concerto in Singapore with the Singapore Chinese Instrument Orchestra. Over the past 25 years, many young composers from the United States, Latin America, Europe, Africa and Asia have created a large body of new and often experimental music for the unique talents of Percussion Group Cincinnati. Percussion Group Cincinnati is an ensemble like no other and their performance in the Bankhead Theater is not to be missed.

Special Added Concert

Friday, January 9, 2009, 8:00 PM – Kai Gleusteen and Catherine Ordronneau - Violin-Piano duo

Since 1999 when they first began to work together, Kai and Catherine Ordronneau have established themselves as one of the most important duos in the interpretation of sonatas for violin and piano. Having performed more than 100 recitals in Europe, Canada and USA, they are praised for their unique partnership, playing under the control of a single intelligence, and for the emotional power of their interpretations.

In 2004, they were featured in the television program Classical Now, a nationally broadcast show, as well as a two-hour program on CBC radio in Canada including a live recital. They have received critical acclaim for their first recording for the AVIE records label, which includes a standout performance of the Prokofiev sonata. A second recording features sonatas by Grieg, Dvorak, and Franck.

Their repertoire encompasses most of the great sonatas for violin and piano, as well as a myriad of short pieces representing the countries where they perform. Among recent projects was a tour in the USA with performances with the St Louis Symphony, recitals in Chicago as well as in the San Francisco area and gala concert in the prestigious Hotel de Ville of Paris.

Reviewers have cited the palpable enthusiasm of these versatile players and the warm audience rapport established by their informative commentary on the music. Quintet members are Alexandra Hawley, flute, James Matheson, oboe, Mark Brandenburg, clarinet, Rufus Olivier, bassoon and Lawrence Ragent, horn.

Sat Mar 7, 2009, 8:00 PM - Cleveland Piano Competition Gold Medalist - Alexander Ghindin

Russian pianist Alexander Ghindin won first prize at the 2007 Cleveland International Piano Competition. From the opening rounds the 30-year-old Ghindin was the clear favorite, as Donald Rosenberg stated in his coverage for

The Plain Dealer, “A full week before he won first prize in the 2007 Cleveland International Piano Competition...Russia's Alexander Ghindin leapt to the front of the piano pack." He clinched his victory with a performance of Rachmaninoff No. 3 with the Cleveland Orchestra with Jahja Ling. Mr. Ghindin graduated from Moscow State P.I. Tchaikovsky Conservatory after completing master class studies with Professor M.S. Voskrensky in 2001. By the age of 13 he had already won the Moscow Young Pianists’ Competition, and at 14 became youngest ever winner at the 10th International Tchaikovsky Competition in 1994, later gaining Second Prize at Brussels International Reine Elisabeth Competition in 1999.

Saturday, April 4, 2009, 8:00 PM - The American String Quartet

Internationally recognized as one of the world's finest quartets, the American String Quartet celebrated its 30th anniversary during the 2005–2006 season. Highlighting the anniversary was the quartet's debut in a new series of recordings on the Arabesque label, including quartets of composer Richard Danielpour. Highlights of their 2006–2007 season include performances with Guillermo Figueroa, Lydia Artimiw and Edgar Meyer, and a tour of Europe. The quartet was honored to perform a series of retrospective concerts celebrating the Naumburg Foundation's 80th anniversary, performed by previous winners of the Naumburg Award.

In over three decades of touring, the American has performed in all 50 states and appeared in virtually every important concert hall throughout the world. Their presentations of the complete quartets of Beethoven, Schubert, Schoenberg, Bartók, and Mozart have won widespread critical acclaim. The 1998 MusicMasters Complete Mozart String Quartets, performed on a matched quartet set of instruments by Stradivarius, are widely considered to have set the standard for this repertoire.

The American's innovative approach to concert programming has won them a number of notable residencies in recent years, including "Beethoven the Contemporary" at the University of Michigan, "The Six Mozart Viola Quintets" at the Aspen Music Festival with Guarneri Quartet violist Michael Tree (broadcast live nationally via Chicago super-station WFMT), and a recent four-year cycle titled "4-5-6…" at Princeton University, where the quartet performed the complete quintets and sextets of Mozart and Brahms, joined in each concert by renowned guest artists.
